Hi Bellas,

I've got a new product review for you.  I've been playing with some new products by Pixi.  Up first is this contour and highlight palette made in collaboration with Beauty Guru Maryam Maquillage.  It can be kinda tough for drugstore contour/highlight palettes to work for everyone.  Does it pass the test?  Check my thoughts below!

Hi Bellas,

I am a sucker for bronzing and contouring, especially when I find a product that makes it quick and easy to get out the door with a sculpted and glowy face.  One of my favorite brands Nudestix just came out with some great bronzing pencils in matte and shimmer shades.  Check it out!

Hi Bellas,

I'm back with another tutorial!  Have you all heard of reverse contouring?  It's a method that I learned from the amazing Celebrity MUA and teacher Eve Pearl.  If you're a beginner Makeup Wearer or a Professional Artist, this simple technique is very good to know so that you can quick contour and cover discoloration.  Don't forget to check out my huge giveaway of Eve Pearl goodies so you can copy the exact look on you!

Hi Bellas,

A few months ago I had a litttle depotting project. I wanted to consolidate my most-used bronzers into one single Z-Palette.  This would make my life much easier so I can easily see and reach for these products as opposed to finding the opening each individual container.  In the process, I thought that this would be a good time to share my favorite bronzers!  I mainly use them on women of color and there are a good amount of inexpensive ones in the bunch.  Check it out!

Hi Bellas,

Contouring is an integral part of my makeup routine.  This involves shading your face with a darker powder, on areas where shadows naturally occur.  The result is a slimmed face, heightened cheekbones and defined features.  I've been a die-hard fan of MAC Blunt Blush to contour for a long time.  However, MAC Harmony blush is another popular contouring blush option.  I acquired both and decided to do a compare and contrast for those of you from medium to tan to dark skintones that are interested in these products.  Check it out!

Hi Bellas,

So last night I was totally planning on getting some makeup stuff done…this included doing my solar bits look and tutorial. But of course I got sidetracked! Not only am I still exhausted from my trip, but i've had makeup stuff every night this week.

So sorry I’ll have to put that look on hold. So until I catch up with the rest of my posts…I’ll take this opportunity to give a review on a product I’ve had the opportunity to play with for the last few weeks.

Posh Firm Control Powder Brush

A few weeks ago I did a review on a 5 piece Posh Travel Brush set. I saw a few of the full sized brushes that I really wanted to try. One in particular was the firm control powder brush. When I contour with my sculpt & shape duo, I always use the MAC 168.

It’s a white haired angled blush brush that fits right into the hollows of my cheeks. I really love it, but I needed a back up that doesn’t cost a whopping $32.

Posh has a brush online that looks just like it. It’s called the White Angle Blush Brush.

I decided to go back to Bed Bath & Beyond to see it in person. In person, I noticed that it was a lot smaller than I expected. The head of a brush also looked a little flimsy.

After a bit of deliberation, I decided to try out the Firm Control Powder Brush instead. It too has an angled head and seems a lot more firm and full than the other.

The brush is listed as $20 online, $9.99 at bed bath & beyond. With my nifty 20% off, it ended up being an affordable $7.99.

I went home and shampooed and conditioned the brush. There was no shedding or bleeding. There is however, a bit of an odd smell. You might need Enkore's Deodorizing method for this one. I noticed the same with my Posh Kabuki brush. After letting it dry over night, I began to incorporate it into my makeup routine. I actually used the brush in my up and coming Kat Von D tutorial. The bristles are soft yet dense. It really creates a strong contour line where you need it. You just have to be careful to blend out the edges as the makeup is applied more heavily than with my 168, which is a fluffier brush.

In all, for $7.99 it’s a pretty good buy. I use this on myself with no problems. I use it everyday for contouring. I really like how the bristles are firm and don’t feel cheap and flimsy. I haven’t tried out too many other angled blush brushes though. Essence of Beauty has a very affordable angled blush brush that seems like a good dupe. Have any of you tried it?

In the meanwhile, next time you’re at Bed Bath & Beyond, break out that 20% off coupon and check this brush out.

Q:
Hey Ren, I was wondering, about products to use for contouring those cheekbones. I noticed you use both mineralize skinfinish AND MAC'S sculpt and shape duo. Is the mineralize skinfinish used to set your makeup or can you just use it to contour? I've noticed in another blog that it's used as mainly a contouring powder, that's why I ask.
Thanks!

I actually use the sculpt & shape duo to contour. the msf natural is used as my setting powder...i like it because it gives my skin a glow as opposed to normal setting powder which can look too matte or cakey. i've heard that many use the msf natural as a contour as well...this requires going a shade or two darker than what you would normally use...for example...my skin tone matches msf natural in med dark. i would choose the msf in dark to contour. so you can you the sculpt & shape duo, or the msf...it's up to you! hope this helps :)

Hi RenRen,

I'd like to quickly say that I'm a huge fan of your makeup blog, and I visit your site daily. It's truly a great resource for anything related to make-up, and your tutorials are awesome! I know that a few posts back you mentioned starting your side bus. of applying makeup for brides and bridal parties. I was hoping I could ask you a few questions based on your experience. I'm actually going to be doing makeup for a bride and her 5 bridesmaids this coming Saturday (ekkk... )! I've got most of what I really need, but I wanted to get an idea from you whether or not there were a few tools I could do without this time around (i.e. disposable razors, etc.) and things you may have left off your list that you later found would have been helpful.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hi Hon!

Thanks for reading and checking out my site.

I definitely have a list of must-haves that I found helpful for working a wedding. I know you’ll do great! Just remember, make sure to use face and eye primer. It will really make that makeup stay!

Here are some things I definitely needed that you might not think of
-bobby pins
-small pair of nail scissors
-fashion tape (to help fasten loose straps, etc…they’ll love you for this!)
-tissues
-alcohol in spray bottle
-lots of makeup brushes…if you have disposable lipstick brushes use these instead of a lip brush--it really cuts down on time
-safety pins
-disposable spatulas...to scoop out product and quickly toss away
-hand sanitizer...use this between each person
-blotting powder for touch ups
-if they’re already dressed make sure you have a makeup cape/or the kind they use at the salon so they don’t get dirty
-extra primer
-moisturizer
-fix plus
-extra lashes just in case
-hair pins to hold back their hairdo
That’s pretty much it besides the makeup, lol.

You can go without
-razors (I didn’t need this)
-hair spray (if you're not doing hair)
-brushes and combs

Let me know how it works out for you!
